SYNOPSIS

In the early 1990s, young Finnish archeology student, Laura, escapes an enigmatic love affair in Moscow, by boarding a train to Murmansk in Russia’s far north in order to look at some ancient rocks. Forced to share the long ride in a tiny sleeping cabin with a rough, vodka-swilling Russian miner. The unexpected encounter leads the occupants of Compartment no. 6 to face the truth about their own loneliness and yearning for human connection. They have 1200 miles and two days together, a worrisome prospect at first, but what transpires between them is warm, surprising, and achingly human. The second achievement by Finnish director Juha Kuosmanen is a melancholic and touching film, crowned with the Grand Prix in Cannes.
