In the early 1990s, young Finnish archeology student, Laura, escapes an enigmatic love affair in Moscow, by boarding a train to Murmansk in Russia’s far north in order to look at some ancient rocks. Forced to share the long ride in a tiny sleeping cabin with a rough, vodka-swilling Russian miner. The unexpected encounter leads the occupants of Compartment no. 6 to face the truth about their own loneliness and yearning for human connection. They have 1200 miles and two days together, a worrisome prospect at first, but what transpires between them is warm, surprising, and achingly human. The second achievement by Finnish director Juha Kuosmanen is a melancholic and touching film, crowned with the Grand Prix in Cannes.

Juho Kuosmanen was born in Kokkola, Finland in 1979, and is now based in Helsinki. Since graduating from ELO Helsinki Film School he has directed for film, theatre, and opera. His short films include Roadmarkers, Citizens and The Painting Sellers, and he directed the feature The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki. This debut feature won the Prix du Jury – Un Certain Regard in 2016 and his second feature film, Compartment no. 6 won the Cannes Grand Prix in 2021.
